It was, in fact, a big night for the French in their home event with French entry "Of Gods and Men" (picked up for U.S distribution by Sony Pictures Classics) taking the Grand Prix (or second place) and Oscar winner Juliette Binoche picking up best actress for "Certified Copy." Binoche, whose image was plastered all over the festival in the official poster this year, perhaps won because she had the talkiest part of any other actress and drifted through three different languages. I, for one, thought the film set in Italy and directed by Iranian filmmaker Abbas Kiarostami, was otherwise a bit of a mess. It has been picked up for U.S. distribution by IFC Films. The French even prevailed in the choice for courts m茅trages (shorts) with the 15-minute animated flick "Chienne D'Histoire."
As expected, another Oscar winner, Javier Bardem, won best actor for his towering portrayal of a dying man in Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's powerful "Biutiful," which had divided support in the press but obviously played well for the jury. Bardem actually tied with Italian actor Elio Germano for his touching work as a father of three whose wife dies in childbirth in "La Nostra Vita" (Our Life), an interesting split between two actors in roles that make strong statements about fatherhood.
The jury prize went to yet another bittersweet film about a father/son relationship, Chad's "The Screaming Man" while Korea's Lee Chang-Dong took the screenplay award for the appropriately titled "Poetry."
And so it's over.
What does it all mean, if anything, as a precursor to the 2010 awards season, which will officially start in September with the Venice/Telluride/Toronto fall fest orgy? Of the prizewinners, expect to see Bardem become a major player leading up to the 83rd Oscars once the Spanish-language "Biutiful" finds a domestic distributor. The film is likely to be Mexico's foreign-language entry even though it was shot in Spain.
Leading the list of foreign-language contenders is "Of Gods and Men," the moving, true drama about a group of monks under siege in war-torn Algeria. It follows nominees 2008 Palme d'Or winner "The Class" and 2009 grand jury winner, "Un Proph猫te," as the obvious French entry (Cannes fest director Thierry Fr茅maux is on the selection committee) but has a better chance than either of those actually to prevail in the category. I guarantee it will play very well with the academy's more conservative selection committee, whereas Thailand's "Boonmee" may be too surreal for their tastes. I humbly remind you I correctly called the last two surprise winners in the race, Japan's "Departures" and Argentina's "The Secret in Their Eyes" (neither played initially at Cannes). "Gods" looks like a good bet at this point.
As I've written here over the last two weeks, other movies not winning award recognition but making a big enough splash here to move on to the academy race include a potential best picture and actress (Lesley Manville) nominee in Leigh's "Another Year," with "Fair Game" also in picture and acting contests (Sean Penn, Naomi Watts).
Un Certain Regard entry "Blue Valentine," previously at Sundance in a longer version, should place for Ryan Gosling's and Michelle Williams' stunning performances and perhaps a slot here or there for out-of-competition entries Oliver Stone's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps" and Woody Allen's "You Will Meet a Tall Dark Stranger," although both are longer shots.
Potential nominees in the feature documentary race showing here will be Charles Ferguson's rapturously received take on the economic meltdown crisis, "Inside Job" (a near certainty) and Lucy Walker's anti-nuke warning shot, "Countdown to Zero," produced by academy vet Lawrence Bender ("An Inconvenient Truth," "Inglourious Basterds"). Prominent in market screenings was Oscar-nominated director Sylvain Chomet's ("The Triplets of Belleville") animated gem, "The Illusionist," which is going to be a significant factor in this year's race for best animated feature. It comes from an un-produced script by the late French icon Jaques Tati and will be released by Sony Pictures Classics.
It has been only 2 1/2 months since the 82nd Oscars, but thanks to Cannes, here we are, already witnessing many names we are sure to be hearing about leading up to the 83rd.
No matter what the consensus is about individual cinematic triumphs and defeats, Cannes is still essential, a brand name and as much a symbol in its own way for film prestige and tradition as Oscar.
I am glad Notes on a Season could be a small part of it this year.
I was having lunch last week with a young director, David Robert Mitchell, whose debut film, the wonderful and intelligent teen comedy "The Myth of the American Sleepover," was the first American movie selected for the Critics Week sidebar competition here in five years. He's so new at this, he had to get time off from his "day job" as a trailer editor in Los Angeles to bring his movie here when it was chosen out of the blue.
